Cave Motion™ | The Motion System Behind Ride Cave's 3D Athletes | Ride Cave

Cave Motion™

One body. Every kind of move.

Cave Motion™ is our new motion system. It lets us animate dynamic fitness poses on a 3D athlete, so the same body can lift, hold a balance, flow from pose to pose and reach for a partner's hand at race speed.

Motions are illustrative. They show you the movement, and they cannot see your form.

In every sport

The same system, three very different jobs.

Strength Training

Every rep, demonstrated.

A 3D athlete in your own character's kit performs each exercise in time with you. Open any exercise, turn the athlete round with your finger, and see the movement from whichever side makes it clear.

Yoga: coming soon

The moves between the poses.

A pose is the easy part. Yoga lives in how you get there, so Cave Motion carries the figure from one pose to the next with the breath, with a planted foot staying planted and a hand finding the mat. Balances, twists and binds all use the same body.

Cycling

Arms that reach out, at race speed.

In a Madison, partners swap with a hand sling. So our cyclists take a hand off the bars: the racing rider reaches back, the relief rider reaches down, and over the last few metres their two hands go to one point and meet. Every team on the track does it, at whatever speed they are riding.

How it works

Built from joints, not recordings.

Most game animation plays back clips, and a clip can only ever show what was recorded. Cave Motion works out each pose from the athlete's body, so a new movement does not need a new recording.

A real skeleton

Hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows and wrists all bend the way a body bends.

Reach for a point

Tell a hand where to go and the arm follows, with the elbow finding its own place. It is the same idea for a hand on a dumbbell, on a mat or on a partner's hand.

Contact that holds

A planted foot stays on the ground and a planted hand stays on the mat while the rest of the body moves over it.

Moves, not just poses

The motion between two positions matters as much as the positions, so the body travels through them instead of snapping from one to the next.

Your look

It is your character doing the moving. The look you made in the Character Builder comes with you.

A real 3D world

Your athlete trains on the infield of a velodrome, and your rider races on the boards, because they are in the world and not painted on top of it.

Questions

Good to know.

What is Cave Motion?

Cave Motion is Ride Cave's motion system. It animates dynamic fitness poses on our 3D athletes: the reps of a strength session and a cyclist's arms reaching out in a Madison, with the poses of a yoga practice coming soon.

Does Cave Motion use my camera?

No. It moves the 3D athlete on your screen. It never uses your camera and it cannot see you.

Can it correct my form?

No. The motions are illustrative: they show you the movement, and they cannot see or check how you are doing it. Move within what feels right for you, and ask a trainer about your form.

Is it motion capture?

No. Nobody is recorded in a suit. Each pose is worked out from the joints of the athlete's body, which is how one system can cover so many different movements.

What does it cost?

Nothing extra. Strength Training and track racing, including the Madison, are free for everyone on Ride Cave.
